Oh, Internet. I turn 30 on Saturday. THIRTY. I'm better with it than I was a few months ago and am trying to get myself in a place of woo going to do things this year. Stay tuned next week for a 30 while 30 list (eh, maybe)(gosh, I'm committed)
But!
To celebrate the momentous occasion of being alive for three decades, am going on a birthday trip with J. Original plan was Paris but as we're using family flight connections instead of spending $85 million on tickets, the Eiffel Tower will just have to wait a bit. So now am sort of ending up where I said I didn't want to be. When we realized Paris was out, we decided to meet in Houston and go from there (Savannah, New Orleans). I mentioned it to Mom on the phone which elicited a gasp of 'you're coming home for your birthday!?!?!'. I...guess so? And because D&L are there, I don't even get my room. So I'll wake up on my first day as a 30 yr old adult type person in my parent's guest room? It'll be nice actually. Mom and I are spending some time at Anthropologie and I'll get Chick Fil A and I'm sure we'll have a nice family bday dinner. But, J and I are rolling with it and will still have a birthday trip of fabulousness!
New options are Montreal (like Paris but no ocean to cross!), Northern MI (it is lovely and a good time of year to go and if I do move in the next year it would be nice to spend some time there), New Orleans (drivable from Houston, I've never been there, will be rainy and hot), Denver (her parents have a summer place there that we could stay at), and NYC (I love it but will be super expensive and have been there many a time).
Think I have it narrowed down to Montreal or Northern MI. But I can't decide! MI has the advantages of less travel, no passport or $ issues, same language. Montreal is someplace new for both of us, I've heard great things about it and it would still hit those Paris ambiance notes I'm looking for...
Where should we go?
As much as I'd love to see you, I say don't come to Houston! It looks like we're (maybe) going to get the first decent amount of rainfall since January. Plus it's ridiculously hot and there is so much dead plant life because of the drought. And speaking from experience, being 30 and waking up in the house you grew up in is not fun. Although to be fair, am decidedly anti-Houston and cannot understand why anyone would want to be here.
I say Montreal! Dust off the French skills! ;) Of course I also adore NOLA, but the rainy/hot thing would be a damper right now. FYI: it's a 5.5-6 hour drive from Houston on I-10. If it's raining that would really suck. Especially the 20ish mile long bridge over the Atchafalaya Swamp Basin.
However if you DO make it to Houston...I want to see you! :)
